Hermès Athens Reopening: Peek inside the orange box!

It was a joyful atmosphere yesterday at the reopening of the Hermès store, on the coveted corner of Voukourestiou Street and Stadiou Avenue!

Champagne might have helped, but so did the vibrant colours of the beautiful and so desirable Hermès Objects (all masterpieces) and the smells of the exquisite perfumes!

The store has been expanded to span 158 square meters of retail space, completely refurbished to present the richness of the Parisian house’s 16 métiers.

Hermès first opened in Athens on 1st November 2005. RDAI, the Parisian architecture agency, under the artistic direction of Denis Montel, has been in charge of this major renovation and extension. RDAI’s legacy stretches back to the firm’s founding in 1972 by the Greek interior designer, Rena Dumas. Upon entering the main entrance on the store’s corner, the house signature ex-libris welcomes the visitor. Past the doors, one is taken on a discovery of Hermès craftsmanship and exceptional know-how starting with jewellery, watches, tableware, women’s silk and perfumes.

The central space hosts the men’s universe including ties, a selection of silk scarves, men’s shoes and accessories. In the store’s new extension, Grecques lights, designed for Hermès in 1925, now illuminate the leather bags, small leather goods, equestrian items, as well as the women’s ready-to-wear collection, shoes and accessories.

Highlighting the craftsmanship and hand-made artistry of all Hermès creations on display, understated design materials have been used throughout the shop that please both vision and touch: European cherry wood in satin matte finish for the furniture, and all ironwork has been given a hairline finish. Meanwhile, a selection of matching fabrics have been used to line the store windows and displays, and fine leather covers the counter in the leather goods section.
All the seating in the store is issued from the Shanghai line, designed by RDAI exclusively for Hermès, and upholstered in leather in a variety of colours.
Three special windows, inspired by Hermès’ 2017 theme “Object sense” with displays designed by Greek artist Socratis Socratous, present an installation revisiting the recurrent theme of zoomorphism as found in Mediterranean cultures, combining it with Hermès imagery and philosophy. Constructed with diverse materials such as iron and bronze, the objects engage in an active dialogue with those by Hermès, and generate a stimulating and thought-provoking narrative between the imaginary and the real.

The constant requirement for the finest quality has always been the quest of Hermès. Since its establishment in 1837, six generations of enterprising and passionate artisans have contributed to spreading its values: a know-how built on the application of highly precise and skilled crafts to the finest materials, the love for beautiful objects created to last over time, and the spirit of constant innovation. A family owned company, Hermès is managed by Chief Executive Officer, Axel Dumas, a member of the sixth generation of the family. The artistic direction is led by Pierre-Alexis Dumas, also a member of the sixth generation.
