“The most delicious Greek island” according to Conde Nast Traveller.
Indeed! I have already been to the island a number of times and I would be happy to return there every summer!
You arrive by boat at the port of Kamares and will need to rent a car to be able to explore the island at leisure.
Sifnos has the most welcoming aura and one can discover picturesque locations and taste the best food! Let’s not forget that this is the birthplace of Tselementes, the “Julia Child” of Greece!
Here you can find the small tavernas with their tables (and your feet!) right in the sand, next to the lacy shores… Exactly as we (or at least I!) picture it in our winter day dreams!
On your first day, go for breakfast or a coffee and a sweet at the coffee shop of Gerontopoulos at Apollonia and don’t forget to buy a jar of mandarin sweet, a speciality and almond sweets. Also try the sweets of Theodorou at Artemonas.
For the romantics…
Who would not dream of getting married here, at the Monastery of Chrysopygi or the Church of the Seven Martyrs, a scene out of a romantic movie, the likes of Mamma Mia!
For the foodies…
Clearly the locals are proud of their island and their gastronomy, it is literally impossible to have a bad meal here… From souvlaki to fish to local dishes (revithada, mastello, manouri and many more), Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, everything is of excellent taste and quality.
Drakakis, Adiexodo, Cayenne, Rabagas, Drimoni at Apollonia.
Lempesis, Tsappis at Chrysopigi.
Limanaki at Faros (the owner is a fisherman).
Tsikali at Vathi.
Mamma Mia for Italian cuisine at Platis Gialos.
Must try! At Platis Gialos, Omega3, a tiny fish, seafood & wine bar at its 4th season! By Chef Giorgos Samoilis.
Also try Nero kai Alati at Platis Gialos.
And of course Loukoumades (Greek doughnut) Aggelon at Apollonia!
Where to sleep…
There are a number of places to stay, located at Kamares, Apollonia, Platis Gialos, Vathi, Artemonas.
The shopping…
Sifnos is also known for its traditional pottery. You can buy terracota casseroles and other stuff at Atsonios, overlooking Vathi. For a fresh approach to the craft, visit Julie Tzanni at Katavati, just at the entrance of the village. Julie will help you choose your gifts and wrap them nicely so that they will reach their destination intact!
If you are looking for the perfect Greek island, with its share of beautiful beaches, mild night life, white Cycladic villages and great food, then look no further!
